Two weeks ago we had a fabulous afternoon at The Cosmopolitan, the new kid on the block in The Maboneng Precinct. The heritage building was built in 1899 and is found opposite MOAD (Museum of African Design) on Commissioner street.
The building features Lion bar, which is one of the original SAB Castle draught beer halls in South Africa, art gallery and sculpture garden curated by Hazard gallery, clothing stores and more to come. It has been said that The Cube restaurant is to be opening a sister restaurant here soon, this we are excited for.
The opening showcased a lot of space which is open to retailers for rental, these spaces were filled with artworks by some of South Africa’s well known artists, Like Haroon Gunn-Salie. Downstairs at the bar, one enjoyed champagne and drinks served over the heritage bar a long side food being served by The Cube. What was exciting and enjoyable were the Bos Ice Tea cans on display with their various colourful designs for their newest can design competition. Lots of creativity!
Upstairs featured great artworks as well the clothing store Threads Project, which is the coolest store, supporting proudly South African Designers. The store allows for some great retail therapy, selling bags, socks, jewellery and clothing for both men and woman. This shop is worth the visit. After all supporting local talent is what we should all be investing in.
Although the building allows for some great potential, it’s still has a lot of work ahead. It has a lot of vacant space which needs to be filled in order to make this an attractive destination for shoppers. The paint was still wet and lights were still being installed. There was no need to rush the launch as they could have waited a month or two to fill the retail space.
I wish the building luck!
